Join Globe Docs for a screening of “Last Days in Vietnam.” During the chaotic fi nal weeks of the Vietnam War, the North Vietnamese Army closes in on Saigon as the panicked South Vietnamese people desperately attempt to escape. On the ground, American soldiers and diplomats confront a moral quandary: whether to obey White House orders to evacuate only U.S. citizens.

Moderator: Walter V. Robinson is Editor At Large at the Boston Globe. Robinson, who led the Boston Globe Spotlight Team that won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for its investigation of the sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests, recently returned to the newspaper after seven years as Distinguished Professor of Journalism at Northeastern University. In the mid-1970s Robinson covered politics and government for the Globe, and went on to cover the White House and presidential elections in 1984, 1988, 1992 and 2000. In 1990 and 1991, he served as
the Globe’s Middle East Bureau chief during the first Persian Gulf War. In 1992, Robinson became the Globe’s city editor, and then the metro editor. As a journalism professor, Robinson and his investigative reporting students produced numerous Page One investigative stories for The Boston Globe. Before joining the Globe in 1972, he served four years in the US Army, including a year in Vietnam as an intelligence officer with the First Cavalry Division.

Panel:

Matthew V. Storin was editor of The Boston Globe from1993 to 2001 and covered the last months of the wars in Vietnam and Cambodia for The Globe while serving as its Asian Bureau Chief, based in Tokyo. After retiring from the Globe he served as a faculty member and administrator at his alma mater, the University of Notre Dame until last spring.

Hugh Doyle appears in the film, describing his experience as Chief Engineer of the USS Kirk, a small naval destroyer that played a key role in rescuing South Vietnamese during Operation Frequent Wind.

Mark Samels is the executive producer ofLast Days in Vietnam and American Experience. Since becoming executive producer of American Experience in 2003, Samels has overseen the production of more than 50 films for the series. Under his leadership, the series has been honored with nearly every industry award, including the Peabody, Primetime Emmys, the duPont-Columbia Journalism Award, Writers Guild Awards, Oscar nominations, and Sundance Film Festival Audience and Grand Jury Awards.

Edward Miller, associate professor of history, Dartmouth College, is a historian of American foreign relations, with particular expertise on modern Vietnam and the Vietnam war. His research is based on archives in the US, Europe, and Vietnam.
